Review on Spices
A brightly coloured awning marks out Spices a well-liked neighbourhood Indian restaurant on Islington's Chapel Market. Inside, there's not much in the way of décor, but service comes with plenty of smiles and the food is authentically on the button.
The lengthy menu is a long trawl through the North Indian and Bangladeshi repertoire, with tandooris and curries in abundance. Beyond the familiar dhansaks and biryanis, it's worth exploring some of the house specialities and chef's recommendations: try Bengal diem (poached egg with spinach in a sweet 'n sour sauce), chicken liver bhuna, duck naga masala and lamb shaktora spiked with Indian citrus fruit. The kitchen also turns out an unusual range of spiced noodles dishes.
Spices is unlicensed, but there are various juices, soft drinks and four kinds of lassi to quench the thirst; alternatively, BYO wine or beer. The place also does a brisk trade in takeaways.
