Review on The Grill Room at Hotel L’Horizon
Built as a private seaside villa in 1850, this popular seafront hotel still boasts some of the finest views over Jersey's most scenic bay: enjoy it all from the terrace in fine weather or from the sliding glass doors and windows of the classy Grill Room. Alcoves and partitions create a feeling of intimacy and photos of film stars grace the walls.
The kitchen deals in contemporary dishes with plentiful use of local seafood and ideas garnered from France and beyond. If you're feeling decadent, start with the 'tasting of foie gras' (a brûlée, a 'lollipop' and a nugget of the stuff with strawberry chutney) or the 'oyster plate'; alternatively, plump for diver-caught scallops with cauliflower and Stilton purée and truffle essence.
Mains call into play seared fillet of cod with asparagus, Jersey Royal brandade and lobster sabayon, pan-roasted turbot fillet with sticky oxtail, surf clams and girolle cream, and a trio of lamb (roast rack and tapenade-crusted fillet plus sweetbread and chick pea pancake), while desserts maintain the complexity with, perhaps, roasted pine nut and pear caramel tart with red wine ice cream. Lunches and more informal meals are served in the Brasserie overlooking the sea.
