Review on The Abingdon
Tucked away just off the main drag of Kensington High Street on Abingdon Road, this born-again back-street boozer The Abingdon, now puts on quite a tasteful show with its white-painted, three-storey façade and an interior that comes complete with ornate ironwork and a curved false ceiling.
Slide doors divide the buzzy bar from the contemporary restaurant, where most of the serious business takes place. The kitchen works to a menu that fuses Mediterranean and Asian influences in true gastro-pub fashion. Menus change daily, but you might notice scallop ceviche with rocket leaves rubbing shoulders with saffron and tomato risotto among the list of starters, while main courses could stretch from seared tuna with spiced Puy lentils and wasabi mayonnaise to grilled pork cutlet with roasted vegetables and rosemary jus. As for desserts, think tarte Tatin, lemon curd cheesecake or raspberry sorbet.
The wine list is an ever-improving slate, running to around 40 bins divided equally between the Old and New Worlds; prices are very reasonable across the board.
