Review on Swinside Lodge
Standing alone in the beautiful open countryside, woods and hills of the Newlands Valley, Swinside Lodge is a handsome Georgian residence just a stroll from Derwentwater and only ten minutes drive from Keswick.
Deep-red colour schemes and flickering candlelight set the tone in the formal, yet relaxed dining room, where evening meals are served at one sitting from 7.30pm. The four-course menu is based around abundant local produce and the fruits of the kitchen's home production. Dishes vary from day to day, but a typical dinner might commence with roast parsnip and chive soup and home-baked bread, before a fish course such as pan-fried fillet of monkfish with potato purée, mussel and saffron jus.
The centrepiece could be roast suprême of guinea fowl with confit of leg, fondant potato and truffle oil, followed by a choice of two desserts – maybe iced white chocolate parfait with a honey tuile and kumquat syrup or glazed lemon tart with raspberry coulis. Cheese is an extra, and proceedings conclude with coffee and petits fours in the sitting rooms. The well-chosen wine list includes a special selection of fine vintages.
