Review on The Kew Gardens Hotel
The 150-year-old Kew Gardens Hotel – just a few minutes walk from the world-famous Gardens – has undergone an astonishing transformation of late, and is now a contemporary urban inn with 19 bedrooms, a Victorian-style bar and a relaxed dining area. It also sports an ultra-cool, sexy mezzanine lounge, reached via a spiral staircase.
Foodwise, the emphasis is on unpretentious gastro pub dishes, and the fortnightly menu is an easy-going mix of classics and eclectic ideas. Smoked haddock kedgeree, ribeye steak with chips and steamed treacle pud satisfy the diehards, while others might be tempted by the prospect of vegetable 'pastilla' with couscous and minted yoghurt, roast monkfish with tomato, mussel and lentil broth, or chocolate and pistachio soufflé cake. Platters of seafood and charcuterie are available to share, and the 40-bin wine list has plenty of decent stuff by the glass; there are also several local brews on handpump.
