Review on Grain Store
Bruno Loubet is wowing critics and foodies alike with his second London restaurant called Grain Store, located on Granary Square in the exciting rejuvenation of the one-time wasteland north of King's Cross station. Set in part of a huge former Victorian Warehouse, the space is also occupied by the Central St Martin's College. The interior has been created by Russell Sage Studio, the same acclaimed architects behind Loubet's eponymous restaurant at The Zetter Hotel. The contemporary space with industrial elements has been designed around the open kitchen, with exposed brick walls and an eclectic mix of wood or metallic tables and chairs. On sunny days there is a vast terrace for al fresco dining with views overlooking the picturesque Regent's Canal and fountains.
The menu roams the globe reflecting Bruno's extensive travels, but unusually it is the vegetable that has been giving the starring role in many of his dishes, but fish-lovers and carnivores needn't worry, as there are enough choices to keep them satisfied as well. Options worth considering among the starters are seared asparagus, green gazpacho sauce, rosemary and pink peppercorn melba toast or courgette, broad bean and prawn falafel with raita. Main courses usher in spiced mash, mint pickled cucumber, raw snowball turnips, broad beans, confit with lamb belly or butternut squash ravioli, sage and mustard apricots, pumpkin seed oil. There's also plenty of tempting desserts to close the show with strawberry and balsamic jam, horseradish ice cream and nasturtium leaves or white chocolate rice crispy, dark chocolate mousse and almond ice cream. Takeaways are also available from the 'Corner Counter' where you can buy salads, soups, quiches and pastries.
There's a well-thought out wine list with many options available by the glass and you can expect delicious innovative cocktails from lauded pioneer drinks creator, Tony Conigliaro.
