Review on Plum + Spilt Milk
Plum + Spilt Milk is the all-day dining restaurant set in the Great Northern Hotel, a Grade II listed building located in the heart of King's Cross St Pancras. It has recently opened for the first time in twelve years after a forty million pound refurbishment, originally designed by Lewis Cubitt for the patrons of the Great Northern Railway Company, it opened on 17th May 1854, London's first railway hotel and the oldest purpose built hotel in London.
The restaurant is named after the distinctive livery worn by the dining cars of the famous Flying Scotsman, which made its first departure in 1862. This railway dining room is set on the first floor of the hotel, with three-metre high floor to ceiling sash windows to take in the views of King's Cross Square. The sleekly groomed dining room features comfy circular cream leather banquettes handmade by Boffi of Milan and set against glossy black lacquered tables. Wood panelled walls are adorned with mirrors and sultry lighting is provided by the 120 beautiful hand blown glass pendants hanging from the ceiling.
Plum + Spilt Milk is overseen by Mark Sargeant of the critically acclaimed Rocksalt in Folkestone, his first venture in London since leaving Michelin-starred Gordon Ramsey at Claridges. The dishes emphasise superior ingredients treated simply with impeccable technique served in an elegant and relaxed atmosphere. From the all-day menu you could kick off with a classic Kent cure smoked salmon paired with rye bread followed by Salt Marsh lamb shank hot pot or maybe braised fillet of turbot with green sauce. While old faithfuls such as Kentish gypsy tart or baked Alaska with marinated cherries round things off in a delightful fashion.
There is a first-class wine list featuring a good spread from across the world with some lovely options by the glass, together with inventive cocktails such as their signature Spilt Milt consisting of vanilla infused Ketel One vodka with a dash of Irish cream, Cocoa blanc and their home-made chocolate syrup, topped with more chocolate.
