Review on Rasa Maricham
This fascinating addition to the London-based Rasa group is located within the Holiday Inn, just by King's Cross/St Pancras station. Like its siblings it takes the cuisine of Kerala province as its jumping-off point, but the menu is largely a celebration of pungent black pepper - known locally as 'black gold'.
Meals always begin with Rasa's signature nibbles and snacks accompanied by stunning homemade pickles and chutneys. Then it's black pepper all the way, with an intriguing selection of meat, fish and vegetarian specialities ranging from dosas to curries.
Among the delights on offer are softy silky medhu vadai dumplings with beads of black pepper and green chillies, lamb maricham stir-fry with coconut toddy, prawn pepper masala and - for veggies - moru kachathu (an unusual combination of sweet mangoes and green bananas cooked in yoghurt with spices). The all-pervading, pungent spice also find its way into some of the sweet offerings served as part of the concluding 'payasam': look for the tiny banana and cardamom pancakes dusted with black pepper powder.
