Review on Cavens Country House Hotel
Built by tobacco baron Sir Richard Oswald in 1752, this country house hotel stands in six acres of landscaped grounds and generates a mood of warmth and intimacy rather than full-on opulence. You can enjoy a stroll in the grounds of sip a drink on the terrace, before progressing to the elegant restaurant with its sumptuous fabrics and oil paintings.
The kitchen delivers modern Anglo-French cooking along the lines of avocado and asparagus salad topped with a lightly poached egg, fillet of Galloway pork with wild mushrooms, apples, brandy and cream and roast monkfish with red pepper sauce, followed by – say – a chocolate pot or cheeses from Loch Arthur Dairy served with oatcakes.
