Review on Souter's Inn
Built on the site of the old schoolhouse where Robert Burns went to school, and named after one of the poet's most colourful characters, Souter's Inn is part of a local regeneration project involving retail units, a coffee house and a whisky shop.
The whole building (formerly the Shanter Hotel) has been completely refurbished inside and out - including a smart new thatched roof - and it is very much a local success story with a family-friendly attitude and one eye on the tourists and golfers using nearby Turnberry.
Hungry visitors have an extensive menu to choose from, with lots of Scottish favourites (Cullen skink, haggis with neeps 'n tatties, grilled liver and bacon with fruitie pudding) as well as platters of Italian cured meats, macaroni cheese, lamb curry and spiced salmon with Asian coleslaw. Burgers, steaks and salads complete the savoury picture, and there are lots of puds to round it off.
