Review on Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
Dinner is the much anticipated Heston Blumenthal restaurant that opened in one of London's most luxurious hotels, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in fashionable Knightsbridge. The name of the restaurant originates from the 13th century French word disner, pronounced dee-nay, and originally stood for breakfast, but due to social and economic changes, the main meal of the day was eventually pushed back to the evening.
Designed by Adam D. Tihany, the restaurant has a contemporary and innovative decor, with floor to ceiling glass walls that displays part of their pedigree wine list. Diners can view the kitchen with its unique pulley system that looks like the intricate parts of a large watch, that serves to rotate the spit on an open-fire. Walls are painted in an ivory shade with porcelain light fittings in the shape of antique jelly moulds and the far wall with its floor to ceiling windows, offers splendid views over Hyde Park.
The menu focuses on simple contemporary dishes inspired by Britain's historic gastronomic past, with recipes dating as far back as the 16th century. Kick off proceedings with typical Blumenthal wizardry, a meat fruit that looks like a perfect mandarin but is actually a chicken liver parfait, follow that with an 18th century recipe of Beef Royal, short rib of Angus beef that has been slow cooked for 72 hours, served with smoked anchovy and onion puree and ox tongue. Outstanding desserts provide an enticing mix of flavours as in the c1730 chocolate bar, passion fruit jam and ginger ice cream or Taffety Tart, c.1660, rose, fennel, and lemon and blackcurrant sorbet. There is a stellar wine list which will delight oenophiles with plenty of top end treasures.
