Review on Nozomi
Uber-stylish, with a dressed-up doorman in full livery outside, Nozomi on Knightsbridge's famous Beauchamp Place oozes luxurious indulgence and attracts some of the wealthiest crowds in town. The interior is a stunning, ultra-chic amalgam of Art Deco and Japanese influences: silver-grey seats and a black granite bar create just the right mood in the cocktail bar, while the glass-roofed dining room is a startling blend of oak floors, off-white silk walls and luxuriously soft leather banquettes.
Any menu that puts roasted lamb with avocado and home-made soy sauce alongside new-style tuna with oshitashi of asparagus asks to be taken seriously, and the food here doesn't disappoint. Grilled black cod has become the talisman of the Japanese new wave, and here is comes with Nozomi special miso and pickled daikon; also check out sea bass with marinated carrots and cilantro sauce, smoked duck breast kuwayaki, and the sensational wagyu beef ('the caviar of carnivores').
The incidentals are just as dazzling – fried edamame with chilli and cinnamon sticks, wondrous assortments of fungi, and extraordinary desserts including green tea fondant with Grand Marnier ice cream, not forgetting the celebratory display of seven fresh fruits 'moriawase' intricately arranged on a wooden platter.
If all of that sounds too bewildering, you can always invest in one of the set menus (from £50 upwards). Alternatively, make your way to the gleaming sushi room, which creates a real contrast to the main restaurant.
