Review on Lancaster House Hotel, The Foodworks
A country house hotel in the modern style, Lancaster House stands in lawned grounds just south of the city, almost opposite the university. An impressive reception lounge complete with a minstrel's gallery leads through to the split-level Foodworks Restaurant, which features a grand piano, lots of intimate alcoves and fine views out towards Morecambe Bay.
The kitchen puts great store by Lancastrian produce for seasonal menus that mix old favourites with new inventions. Homemade black pudding with caramelised apple and wholegrain mustard is a signature dish, likewise lamb hotpot served with carrot and swede dauphinoise and pickled red cabbage. Other local offerings might include Lancashire cheese tartlet with red onion marmalade, potted Morecambe Bay shrimps and poached Goosnargh chicken breast with bubble 'n squeak. A few European interlopers also show up along the way (butternut squash and roasted red pepper risotto, for example), while desserts could embrace everything from warm cherry Bakewell to baked rice pudding with white chocolate and strawberry jam.
