Review on The Swan at Southrop
The well-endowed, handsome Swan is still the sedate village pub on the village green. It still dispenses real ales and still has a working skittle alley, not to mention a pretty rose garden and accommodation in the four cottages in the courtyard.
You might begin with a starter of chicken liver and foie gras parfait with red onion and apple chutney and country toast or potted shrimps with melba toast. Main courses offer skillet roast butterflied fillet of mackerel with brown butter, capers, spinach and fries or maybe a heartwarming braised shin of beef with horseradish dumplings, carrots, chestnuts and mash. Round things off with a classic bread and butter pudding with crème anglaise or chocolate fondant with malt and baileys ice cream.
There is an extensive wine list which reflects their passion for Old World wines as well as their own Swan Bitter, and a special local guest ale which features each month.
