Review on Bobby's

Bobby's has ruled on Belgrave Road since opening in 1976 and it remains one of Leicester's most likeable Indian vegetarian restaurants. It is still enthusiastically run by the Lakhani family and continues to shine like a beacon. There's not much in the way of décor - the ground floor is taken up with a few tables and a busy takeaway counter dealing in snacks and technicolour sweetmeats, while the upstairs room has a less frenetic atmosphere.

Mrs Lakhani's food is bright and pretty, with home-ground spices and fresh herbs add a special zing. Farsan snacks such as lentil kachori, stuffed chillies and dhokla (savoury sponges glazed with mustard and sesame seeds) give way to 'sabzi' curries involving all kinds of exotic vegetables. Home-baked breads are out of the top drawer - especially puran puri, deep-fried bhatura and thepla (millet bread speckled with fenugreek and spinach).

Thalis are remarkable value and the kitchen serves up unusual specials at the weekend: look for patra (malanga leaves rolled with spicy chickpea paste), ondhwo (a savoury cake of carrots and lentils) or the peanut stuffed potato bhajia in crisp batter. Drink refreshing lassi, rose-flavoured faluda or Bobby's legendary ice-cold passion fruit cocktail; beer and wine are also available and you are welcome to BYO (£2.50 corkage).
