Review on Chandlers Restaurant
One of the leading lights on the Staffordshire dining scene, Chandlers is a buzzy brasserie and bar on the first floor of Lichfield's old Corn Exchange building. It's a place noted for its convivial atmosphere, with affable staff, subtle pin lighting, tiled floors and prints creating just the right mood; the layout is spacious enough for you to breathe but cosy enough for intimate conversation.
The kitchen looks to Europe for most of its ideas and inspiration, with some creative British touches and fondness for fresh seafood. Fish fans might plump for grilled whole lemon sole with rosemary butter or pan-fried sea bass with wilted spinach and cherry tomatoes. Other options could range from warm smoked pigeon and walnut salad to rump of lamb with pea, mint and broad bean purée. As for afters, think boozy Whisky Mac tiramisu or Eton mess.
Fixed price menus are great value for money (particularly Sunday lunch), and the wine list is decently priced and well-balanced, with around a dozen offered by the glass. You can also grab something quick in the bar - perhaps a tortilla wrap filled with shredded hoisin duck or a bowl of chicken and bacon Caesar salad.
