Review on The Star Inn
The Star Inn has brought a touch of Spanish vitality to Suffolk, a 400-year-old pub in the middle of the gentrified village of Lidgate. From the outside, it doesn't look much, and the interior is still as traditionally English as they come, from the smoke-blackened inglenook to the locals quaffing pints of Greene King ale or playing bar billiards or darts.
What singles the place out is its blackboard menu where you can expect unique Mediterranean dishes from the region of Catalan, perhaps skilfully dressed Catalan tuna salad, hake à la Vasca and squid stuffed with seafood, along with scallops Santiago and ever-popular paella Valenciana.
Other countries also get in on the act, so you might encounter carpaccio of salmon or venison, lasagne, monkfish in tapenade sauce – even sirloin steak with Stilton sauce, all served with crispy batatas bravas.
Desserts are straightforward offerings ranging from tiramisù to bread-and-butter pudding or apple pie; alternatively go for the interesting selection of Spanish cheeses, which includes much more than the now-ubiquitous Manchego. The mainly Spanish wine list is peppered with good things at realistic prices.
