Review on Sheedy’s Country House Hotel
Dating back to the eighteenth century, this converted farmhouse is ideally situated in tidy grounds on the fringes of the Burren (Ireland's mysterious 'limestone pavement'). It's been the Sheedy family home for more than three hundred years, and present incumbents John and Martina have nurtured the place as a personable country hotel.
Martina presides over the show with an easy-going Irish charm, while John holds sway at the stoves. He takes top-notch ingredients and treats them confidently, with more than a hint of flair along the way. The traditional touch shows in asparagus spears wrapped in smoked salmon or slow-roast duck with sage and onion stuffing, in contrast to rump of lamb with butterbean purée and tomato-flavoured gravy or seared salmon on a bed of bacon and cabbage with potato and scallion sauce. To conclude, fine Irish cheeses sit alongside desserts like poached pear with lemon curd and shortbread biscuits.
Alternatively, try something more casual in the Seafood Bar (same opening times), where the menu offers hearty stuff ranging from Galway crab salad to Irish stew. The concise international wine list offers a good choice, with fair prices across the range.
