Review on Hole in the Wall

A quintessential 16th century Cambridgeshire hostelry down a narrow country lane is the setting for The Hole in the Wall that operates as a restaurant and local pub. It was taken over by new owners in 2011, Alex Rushmere, a 2010 Masterchef finalist and chef Ben Maude. The whole place feels rustically pubby with lots of exposed beams, dark wood and cosy open fires.

The kitchen delivers a seasonal menu that showcases local ingredients on its daily changing menu. Kick off with seared pigeon breast, blackberry, bacon and onion salad or maybe crayfish and dill skagen served with caraway and poppy seed rye bread. Main courses take in Telmara farm duck breast, potato and onion rosti, pickled cucumber and spiced caramel sauce or whole lemon sole, lemon, caper and garlic butter sauce, peas and purslane. Bringing up the rear are desserts such as salted caramel chocolate pot or a lovely traditional sticky toffee pudding. Sunday lunch is a very popular affair and you will need to book two weeks in advance to ensure a reservation.
