Review on Hard Days Night Hotel, Blakes Restaurant
Dedicated to the Fab Four, this lavishly re-designed Grade-II listed building is deep in the heart of Liverpool's 'Beatles Quarter', just round the corner from the original Cavern Club. As you might expect, images of John, Paul, George and Ringo are everywhere, and musical references abound.
Blake's Restaurant tips its hat to Sir Peter Blake, the British artist who created the cover for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. True to form, the modern dining room is splattered with imagery, including monochrome portraits of the 60 celebs and historical figures featured on the design. Four huge white lampshades hang symbolically from the ceiling.
The food is unaffected modern British in style, and the show might begin with braised ham hock roulade and spiced pineapple chutney or organic salmon tartare with new potato salad and cucumber relish. Main courses could be breaded brill fillets with roasted vine tomatoes and tomato butter or roast Goosnargh chicken breast with braised red cabbage and chestnut jus, while desserts such as strawberries in Champagne jelly or warm chocolate fondant with cherry compote bring the curtain down. The wine list has a good global spread at fair prices.
