Review on Forelles at Fishmore Hall
A stunningly restored Palladian-style mansion on the outskirts of Ludlow, Fishmore Hall was transformed into a boutique country house hotel in 2007. Privately owned, it has been gloriously fitted out with designer fixtures and fittings and makes the most of its position overlooking the town.
The views from the restaurant are some of the best you could wish for, and the dining room looks the part with its moulded cornices, polished wood floors and elegant trappings. The terrace also comes into its own when the sun shines.
Contemporary food with a peppering of local ingredients is the kitchen's remit, and menus read enticingly. To start, there might be braised pig's cheek with langoustine, celeriac and anise or lamb's sweetbreads with violet artichokes, wild mushrooms and eucalyptus. Mains move into the realms of Mortimer Forest venison with caramelised garlic and smoked chocolate, while desserts could feature rum-roast banana with coffee jelly and pistachio ice cream.
