Review on Hix Oyster & Fish House
British food champion Mark Hix followed his successful Oyster & Chop House in London's Smithfield by opening this fish-based cousin, Hix Oyster & Fish House, overlooking the famous Cobb and harbour in Lyme Regis. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide great vistas, or you can enjoy it all from the fine-weather terrace.
It's a dream location with marvellous views of the Jurassic coastline, and the kitchen takes full advantage of the catch from the local boats. A blackboard advertising the day's oysters sets the tone, and the full menu changes every session depending on the catch and other local supplies from farms and wild foraging.
Starters could range from Lyme Bay fish soup laced with Julian Temperley's Somerset cider brandy to deep-fried squid with West Bexington chilli sauce, while mains might run to fish pie with lettuce heart salad, Dorset Blue lobster and chips or grilled mackerel with beetroot and horseradish salad. There are a couple of meat dishes (perhaps roast grouse or grilled hanger steak), while desserts tempt with the likes of gooseberry fool or perry jelly.
