Review on Prince Alfred & Formosa Dining Room
Built in 1863, the affectionately named 'PA' is a glorious example of ornate pub Victoriana, all impeccably preserved for the twenty-first century. Take at look at the beautifully carved gilt and wood bar, the vast sculpted ceilings, the etched plate-glass windows and the fascinating mahogany 'snob screens' - not to mention the tiny Lilliputian doorways connecting each little snug area of the place.
By contrast, the adjoining Formosa Dining Room is a spacious and modern add-on, marked out by mosaic artwork, an open kitchen and views of the street after which it is named. The menu changes each day, but expect eclectic gastropub dishes along the lines of watermelon, basil and Feta salad, twice-cooked pork belly, wild mushroom risotto, Cumberland sausages and mash, and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The global wine list features around 30 selections by the glass.
