Review on Second Floor at Harvey Nichols
Black marble floors and tall windows looking out onto Manchester's cityscape set the cosmopolitan tone in this branch of Harvey Nic's restaurant collection. It's a suitably chic and swanky setting for contemporary cooking, which soaks up influences and ideas from near and far.
The kitchen plunders the Mediterranean for much of its inspiration. Lobster acquerello risotto with seared scallop and cucumber 'bubbles' is an eye-catching starter, while main courses might take in anything from cannon and confit of lamb with spring onion mash, pistachios and mint jelly to pan-fried swordfish with confit Jersey Royals, warm gazpacho and broad bean salsa.
This is bold stuff, and it's followed by a line-up of desserts that ranges from the tongue-in-cheek Black Forest 'Arctic roll' with cherry compote to fashionable pineapple carpaccio with equally fashionable companions including coconut lemongrass pannacotta and chilli syrup. The wine list is a majestic tome, opening with own-label bottles and moving into the realms of pedigree vintages from some of the world's most forward-looking and head-turning producers.
