Review on Room
Like its elder brother in Leeds, Room Manchester is an eye-catching blend of stunning retro chic and urban cool. It occupies the site of Reform, on one of the city's most famous shopping streets.
The kitchen knocks out retro classics with a contemporary twist and during the day you can take a trip down memory lane with Welsh rarebit (aka. 'cheese on toast'), corned beef hash and chicken Kiev, but check the small print: fish and chips uses monkfish, tikka masala involves sea bass and lentils and slow-roast pork comes with a toffee apple.
Evening menus provide a few add-ons, like vol-au-vents filled with purple figs and shallots, crispy confit of duck with three bean cassoulet and Welsh lamb stew with mint and dumplings or chow mein with tofu and chilli. To round things off, try chocolate fondue with fresh fruit, homemade marshmallow and honeycomb or pistachio crème brûlée. Note that the bar stays open until 2.00am from Thu-Sat. A third branch is now open at 62 Castle Street, Liverpool.
