Review on Roti Chai
Just a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street on Portman Mews is where you will find the Roti Chai restaurant offering cutting edge Indian street food. Its owner Rohit Chugh is no stranger when it comes to running successful restaurants, he used to be the Managing Director of the highly regarded Cinnamon Club in Westminster.
The restaurant is spread over two floors with the ground floor operating as the 'street kitchen' a casual all day dining venue with a canteen style décor, displaying colourful posters of Indian food on its walls. It is here that you can order their popular spiced chicken lollipops or their Punjabi 'tikka wala' mini burgers.
The dining room is accessed by a staircase and offers a more formal eating experience with a muted décor in an industrial chic setting. To start you might choose the Bengali crab and fishcake a rustic patty served in India's railway stations, followed by a main course of Awadhi lamb korma, a regal dish with rosewater and saffron. To finish there are classic Indian desserts such as payasam, fresh fruit with a South Indian saffron and almond custard or khubani ka meetha, spiced apricots with clotted 'malai' cream. The food is matched by a concise wine list and a tempting Indian influenced cocktail menu.
