Review on Tavern at Tansley
In the heart of the Derbyshire countryside, the stone-built Tavern at Tansley is a fiercely loyal set-up, supporting its local producers, dispensing traditional beers and ensuring its punters are entertained with everything from wine tastings to live jazz. The menu is refreshed every three months to take account of the seasons and available produce: its aim is to offer a choice of 'English dishes influenced by world wide culture and creative flair'.
So-called 'plain and simple' offerings like bangers and mash, braised lamb shank and Caesar salad are available at lunchtime and until 7.30 in the evening, but it's the full menu that really catches the eye. The kitchen is dedicated to getting the best from Derbyshire's larder, so expect chicken liver and oyster mushroom parfait with homemade sweet basil and orange marmalade before slow-cooked local oxtail in Guinness with white onions and thyme liquor or loin of Wingerworth pork topped with tomatoes and Mozzarella with pesto cream sauce (an appropriate wine is listed with each main course). A slate of freshly made desserts concludes events.
