Review on Butlers Restaurant, The Chesterfield Hotel
'Discreet' is a word that sits comfortably with the Chesterfield, an exclusive hotel with a fine Georgian façade and an A-list Mayfair address off Berkeley Square. A quietly elegant, marble-floored foyer sets the tone, there's a clubby bar with a resident pianist every evening, plus an airy conservatory overlooking the garden (perfect for drinks, light meals and afternoon tea).
The Chesterfield' s fine dining restaurant, Butlers, has long been famous for serving 'the best Dover sole in London', but there's much more to the menu than old-world classics. To be sure, you can still get smoked salmon sliced to order from the trolley as well as a daily roast, but the kitchen buys wisely and is prepared to be creative.
Pan-fried goats' cheese is served with lavender honey, diver-caught scallops are partnered with haggis and whisky sauce, while roast Croisé duck comes with homemade sloe gin and plum sauce. Elsewhere, expect a trio of sausages on sweet potato mash, rump of Suffolk Black Head lamb with harissa, apricots and coriander couscous, and desserts ranging from blackberry and apple crumble to honeycomb ice cream with pecan nut and caramel sauce. The 80-bin wine list has a particularly good showing from the Southern hemisphere.
