Review on Nobu Berkeley St
This addition to Nobu's presence in London is a palatial Mayfair address spread over two floors, with a luxurious cocktail lounge at ground level and the restaurant above. As you might expect, the interior is style incarnate courtesy of David Collins, who's given the dining room a warm feel with clever lighting and a canvas embroidered with shades of green velvet along one wall.
The controversial 'no bookings' policy (lifted from Nobu Next Door in New York) didn't last and the restaurant now operates on normal terms (although you can expect a strictly enforced time limit on tables in the evenings). Nobu classics such as the much-lauded sashimi of yellow fin tuna with jalapeño dressing and black cod with miso still feature, but the menu also promotes a few earthier ideas such as toro collar with aubergine steaks and crispy belly pork with spiced miso.
Sushi rolls are exquisite works of art, while the pick of the desserts is the fabulously OTT chocolate bento box. The ultra-glitzy downstairs bar is famous for its saké-based Martini cocktails; otherwise, the wine list is a swanky selection of well-chosen bottles with prices tailored to the moneyed international set.
