Review on Well View
Moffat was famous as a spa town during Victorian times and this admirable restaurant-with-rooms takes its name from the local well. The Schuckardts offer a daily-changing menu with no choice until desserts. A tiny canapé starts things off before, say, cream of tomato and harissa soup with warm home-baked rolls. Next comes a fish course, perhaps Thai smoked salmon with melon and a tarragon dressing before a palate-cleansing sorbet (passion fruit, for example).
The centrepiece is something classically inclined and local, such as fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef on a bed of roasted root vegetables with red wine sauce and dauphinoise potatoes. After a selection of cheeses, proceedings conclude with a choice of desserts ranging from crème brûlée to chocolate Mocha fudge tart. Well View isn't licensed, but complimentary wine is served with meals.
