Review on The Checkers
The Checkers in Montgomery has only been open since March 2011 and already it is celebrating one of the top culinary accolades, a Michelin star. This former coaching inn has been sympathetically renovated creating a pleasing mix of old and new, featuring a relaxing bar and lounge area, an inviting dining room and three stylish bedrooms.
Accomplished chef proprietor is Stéphane Borie who honed his skills with Michael Roux at the Michelin three-starred Waterside Inn at Bray, as well as with Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons. Stéphane runs the restaurant with his partner Sarah, also a very skilled chef and her sister Kathryn who is in charge of front of house, marketing themselves as The Frenchman and the Farmer's Daughters!
Stéphane presents a monthly changing menu that combines classic French and British dishes, using top quality seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. Typically you might begin with a terrine of foie gras with cherries and toasted brioche or a warm salad of seared scallops, fennel and ginger salad with a tomato and basis dressing. Main courses take in roasted breast of Gressingham duck, crushed potato with peaches and raspberry and grenadine jus or pan fried red mullet with Israeli couscous and gazpachio. To conclude there are tempting desserts with a classic British summer pudding with double cream or rose water scented panna cotta with poached nectarines.
The food is supported by a carefully chosen wine list with some offerings by the glass. Service is notably friendly and attentive ensuring a relaxed and welcoming ambience.
