Review on 2 Fore Street Restaurant
Widely tipped as a hot ticket on the south-west Cornish coast, this bright new restaurant has caused quite a stir since it opened. It stands right on Mousehole harbour front, with glorious views from the chic, airy dining room. Neutral colours, whitewashed walls hung with nautical artwork and distressed wooden tables set the scene and the kitchen delivers the goods.
Chef Joe Wardell learned his craft with Raymond Blanc and it shows in the clarity and freshness of his cooking. Given the location, seafood is naturally a strong suit on the sensibly short evening menu: mussels are steamed with chilli, garlic and coriander, shell-roasted scallops are dressed with sweet tomato and basil butter, while whole plaice is simply grilled and served with samphire.
Away from the sea, visitors can expect chicken liver and thyme pâté, cider-braised ham hock with white beans, and rocket pappardelle with Cornish Blue cheese and toasted walnuts. To close the show, the kitchen offers white chocolate pannacotta with stewed blueberries, chocolate rum torte with clotted cream, locally produced Helsett Farm ice creams and sorbets, plus a slate of Cornish cheeses. Lunch brings simpler stuff, from open ciabatta sandwiches to marinated beetroot, Feta and poached pear salad; the wine list is short and to the point.
