Review on Dower House
This secluded seventeenth-century building (originally a thatched farmhouse on the 3000-acre Highland Estate) has been a real home-and-home for Robyn and Mena Aitchison since they bought the place in 1989.
The style has been described as 'cottage orné', and the dining room is an atmospheric mix of Persian rugs, old paintings and antique mahogany tables, with a white marble fireplace at one end. Menus change daily, there's no choice and the language couldn't be simpler: roasted quail on a bed of bulgar wheat; seared scallops with rosemary and anchovy dressing; hot raspberry soufflé, for example.
Alternatively, the line-up might include a warm lamb salad and breast of guinea fowl with wild mushrooms and herbs, followed by pears baked in red wine syrup. The only unchanging extra is coffee with homemade truffles. The wine list straddles the globe and there's an extensive choice of whiskies in the self-service 'malt cupboard'.
