Review on The Derg Inn
Terryglass ('the land of the two streams') has been described as Ireland's 'most absurdly beautiful small village'; it's also brimming with history. The site can trace its lineage back to the time of Saint Patrick, and the family-run Derg Inn is surrounded by part of a centuries-old 'bawn' (garrison wall) which was built to secure the Pass of Shannon from Connaught rebels.
These days the pub is famed for its food and drink, and it attracts an animated mixed crowd of tourists, boating types, fishermen and intrepid water-skiers. The kitchen feeds all-comers with bacon and cabbage, seafood chowder and beef and Guinness pie, as well as eclectic dishes including chicken satay, wild mushroom tagliatelle and honey-roast medallions of pork with red onion confit. There's regular live music in summer, with Sunday evenings set aside for traditionalists.
