Review on The Mountview Hotel
Framed by the Forest of Abernethy in the heart of the Cairngorms, this imposing Edwardian country house hotel certainly lives up to its name. It stands high on a hill in an area of 'outstanding natural beauty' and has become a Mecca for serious birdwatchers - as well as hikers and golfers - over the years.
The airy restaurant has big picture windows to make the most of the views, and it provides a stylish backdrop for food with a modern flavour. Scottish ingredients show up strongly in dishes such as salad of seared Glebe Farm beef with chicory and caramelised red onions, Crabster king scallops with Arbroath smokie sauce and roast fillet of venison flavoured with juniper and black grapes. Excellent Scottish cheeses bring up the rear, alongside desserts such as summer pudding, peach mousse and chocolate torte.
