Review on Hotel TerraVina

Set in a delightful rural, wooded hamlet on the edge of the New Forest and just six miles from Southampton, Hotel TerraVina is an attractively extended Victorian residence that now sets out its stall as a luxury boutique hotel complete with attractive cedar-wood extensions, a seductive colonial-style roof terrace and a swish modern restaurant complete with an open kitchen (including a wood-burning oven).

Free-range, local and organic produce is central to the set-up, and menus make the most of what the region has to offer. Here you might enjoy deep-fried skate with roasted ceps and caper mayonnaise or a tian of Salisbury goats' cheese and home-grown thyme before sea bass fillet with herb risotto, green vegetables and truffle oil or sage-stuffed loin of pork with spinach and apple purée. To finish, try crème brûlée with Earl Grey tea cream.

The hotel is co-owned by Gerard Basset, one of the original founders of the Hotel du Vin chain, so wine is a star turn here. Take a tour of the cellar and make your choice - or ask advice from one of the clued-up sommeliers. Tastings, wine weekends and 'sabrage' (the art of opening Champagne with a sabre) are a big draw.

    Sunday Lunch

    Excellent service, friendly not patronising. Very good wine list, knowledgeable sommelier and waiters. 3 course lunch (pigeon breast, roast beef and roast plums with raspberries and parfait, Steven had the gooseberry fool and shortbread) including coffee and homemade petit fours for £27.00 per head. Food was super, fresh, seasonal and beautifully cooked.
    Vegetables were cooked al dente so lovely bite but not raw. Coffee was lovely (so difficult to get a good cup of coffee), mellow not bitter and petit fours were also homemade. The restaurant is classy and comfortable, look forward to using the terrace when weather is warmer. Lovely lawn and back drop of trees and bamboo with deer, squirrels, robins etc. Loos are fab, very clean and everything you need. All in all this is definitely one I would recommend (and I am fussy). We are looking forward to going back for dinner a la carte. Absolutely fabulous value and a good experience, definitely recommend.
