Review on The Grange Hotel, Cutler's Restaurant
A rather charming, privately run hotel in the heart of the Newark, the Grange is a popular haunt for business and celebrations, with its excellent facilities and secret garden, plus a paved patio for floodlit evening soirées.
Cutler's Restaurant is a high-ceilinged Victorian dining room appropriately bedecked with memorabilia and displays of antique cutlery. It's an elegant and rather old-fashioned setting - complete with gold, blue and red furnishings - and it chimes well with the menu of mainstream European and classic international food.
The kitchen doesn't set out to shock or surprise; instead it offers reliable mainstream dishes along the lines of wild mushroom risotto, braised brisket of beef with Anna potatoes and parsnip purée, and baked fillet of salmon with spinach, white wine and prawn sauce. Desserts such as bread-and-butter pudding or lemon tart are in keeping.
