Review on Electric East
Barn Asia after a short closure has re-opened as Electric East, located just off St James' Boulevard, next to Dance City, it aims to bring a taste of vibrant Pan Asian cuisine to the city in exactly the same vein as its predecessor.
The interior has been described as 'worker party ethic meets colonial splendour', which means colourful lanterns, bamboo and lurid artwork inspired by the Vietnam War. Influences from Thailand, Korea, Japan and Cambodia crop up on the menu, and diners are encouraged to graze their way through a succession of user-friendly fusion-style dishes of manageable proportions.
Among the savoury delights on offer are pork and shiitake mushroom 'pot-sticker' dumplings, skewered king prawns with Szechuan cucumber and shan nam prik, and Singapore laksa tofu curry. Other ideas are even more intriguing - scallops with pork and peanut caramel or duck egg with Asian mushrooms, oyster sauce and prickly ash, for example. To finish East meets West in the shape of passion fruit panna cotta, exotic fruit soup or a lemon tart with meringue ice cream.
