Review on Dromoland Castle, Earl of Thomond Restaurant
One of Ireland's grandest and most historic castles, Dromoland can trace its history directly back to the original Gaelic royal families and the descendants of Brian Boru. Surrounded by 375 acres of grounds it is now a famous country house hotel complete with a conference centre and championship golf course.
The spectacular Earl of Thomond restaurant is a sumptuous mix of gilded mirrors, Venetian silk hangings and Waterford crystal glass chandeliers. Here, diners can enjoy elaborate dinners to the accompaniment of the hotel's resident harpist. Four-course menus work their way through skilfully crafted dishes like stuffed ballotine of chicken, a duo of lamb with Savoy cabbage and shallot sauce, and loin of estate venison with pearl barley and celeriac risotto.
Elsewhere in the hotel, the Fig Tree provides casual food right through the day; alternatively, enjoy some daytime refreshment in the cocktail bar (formerly the Dromoland library).
