Review on Kirroughtree House
Stately as a galleon, this grand eighteenth-century mansion stands in an elevated position, surrounded by eight acres of landscaped gardens on the edge of Galloway Forest Park. There is an air of unashamed opulence everywhere.
Mull of Galloway lobster, Cree salmon, Kirroughtree venison and Wigtown Bay wild fowl are just some of the regional specialities that find their way into the kitchen. Dinner is an elaborate, four-course affair that might kick off with exotic bang-bang chicken before heading homewards for seared Solway scallops with citrus and vanilla dressing or pan-fried foi gras with wild mushrooms and green beans. Following on are main courses which could span anything from fillet of halibut with couscous, baby corn, leeks and Noilly Prat sauce to breast of free-range guinea fowl 'grandmère' with cauliflower and potato mousseline.
Desserts such as mango bavarois bring the curtain down – along with Scottish cheeses – and the wine list is a heavyweight, with France looming large, but plenty of interesting alternatives from elsewhere.
