Review on Chez Dennis
Chez Dennis is an intimate family-run French Caribbean restaurant in the heart of Norwich city centre, set in a Grade II listed building, tucked away in a small alleyway in Orford Yard. This gem of a restaurant with its unassuming décor and delightfully welcoming ambience is light and airy, displaying interesting local and French Caribbean artwork on the walls.
Chef/patron is Caribbean-born Denis Rosembert whose love of cooking started as a young child of six, when his grandmother taught him how to cook. He trained on the island of St Lucia, has been cooking since 1973 and is now enjoying serving the denizens of Norwich and beyond his well executed and vibrant French Creole dishes.
Fish lovers will be pleased with the large seafood choice on the menu, kicking
off with Crabe Neige Frit, soft-shelled crab coated with breadcrumbs and dry mustard powder, fried and served with a Creole sauce or maybe Crevettes Sauté Marigobay, fanned jumbo prawns sautéed in garlic butter, green pepper corns and lemon juice, finished with Lee & Perrins sauce. There's plenty of choice on the carte for meat-lovers as well with a starter of Petit brochette de Poulet, tender marinated cubes of chicken on a skewer, sautéed in vegetable oil, served with a Creole barbecue sauce and a main course of Jerk Filet de Porc au Carib, hot and spicy tender pork fillet marinated in Jerk spices, sautéed in hot butter, paired with a spicy sauce. Desserts are hard to resist with ripe St Lucian bananas, tossed in Demerara sugar, flambéed with St Lucian rum, then wrapped in pancakes and served with a banana toffee sauce.
There's a concise wine list that offers good value and make sure you try one of their very tasty rum cocktails.
