Review on Ibérico World Tapas
The team behind the award-winning World Service recently gave the Nottingham restaurant scene an extra hit with their casual new venture in the Lace Market. Ibérico World Tapas is housed in the unlikely setting of the Grade II-listed Shire Hall, below what was once the old county jail - and it's full of surprises.
The old vaulted ceilings and flagstone floors have been given the 'modern rustic' treatment, stools are clustered around the walnut bar, while Moorish tiles and mirror-backed frescoes add a touch of exoticism. The menu is split between classic Spanish tapas and Pan Asian grazing dishes - and it throws up some unlikely bedfellows.
Patatas bravas, chorizo in red wine, zarzuela and courgette flowers stuffed with Montenebro cheese rub shoulders with steamed edamame, scallop carpaccio with yuzu truffle vinaigrette, squid skewers with palm sugar dressing and duck with pears and sancho pepper. Desserts revert to type with Spanish classics including churros and hot chocolate, crema catalana and the less familiar yoghurt cake with pistachio, pomegranate and lemon curd.
The restaurant's opening hours should appeal to the office crowd as well as latecomers: once the main service is over, cold tapas is available until the joint closes (midnight most days, but 2.00am on Saturdays). Drinkers have an eclectic choice of tipples: try the house wine Txakoli - a slightly fizzy Basque white traditionally served in tumblers.
