In a narrow street below Nottingham Castle, this gracious Georgian house was once the home of the local United Services Club – which explains part of the current name. The 'world' tag is not only a broadcasting pun, but also refers to the globetrotting menu and the décor of the place. Walk through the specially designed Japanese-style pebbled garden to reach the restaurant, which is a fusion of colonial grandeur (panelled walls, tiled floors) with oriental exoticism (Indonesian lacquered tables, tribal masks, statues).
The kitchen happily embraces East and West, offering crispy duck samosas with pak choi and cashew nut salad or grilled local goats' cheese with onion bhajia and pineapple salsa alongside slow-roast belly pork with rösti and Bramley apple sauce or pan-fried royal bream with sweet pepper, chorizo and hazelnut ragoût. To finish, expect things like three-spiced crème brûlée or warm creamed rice pudding with red wine and a poached pear.
Fixed-price light lunches offer decent value for the likes of mulligatawny soup with coriander cream, seared salmon with char-grilled aubergines, and praline parfait with passion fruit sorbet. The wine list is a classy package tour through the Old and New Worlds, with some additional 'fine wines' and sakés also on show.
