Review on The Black Swan at Oldstead
The Black Swan a 16th century county inn on the edge of the small village of Oldstead with beautiful views of the North York Moors, has been lovingly and sympathetically restored by the Banks family, who have lived and farmed here for generations. Enter through the bar with stone flagged flooring, blazing open log fire, oak fittings by Mousey Thompson Craftsmen of Kilburn, window seats, soft cushions and antique furnishings, creating a charming and welcoming atmosphere. The award winning restaurant the recipient of a prestigious Michelin star and four AA rosettes is a stylish venue, with Persian rugs on the oak floor and soft ambient lighting from traditional candles in antique brass holders.
Chef Adam Jackson has left for pastures new and his position has been taken up by Tommy Banks, the former sous chef and son of co-owners Tom and Anne Banks. Amongst the starters look for tuna tartare with pickled ginger, wasabi, lime, aubergine and sesame toast or rabbit cannelloni with cauliflower and piccalilli. Inventive mains follow in the shape of roast cod with red pepper gratin, crab brandade and sauce vierge or venison saddle with haunch rillette, crushed potatoes, mulled-wine salsify, carrots and Savoy cabbage. Proceedings conclude in style with desserts like dark chocolate with peanuts and salted caramel or fig and pistachio bakewell paired with creme anglaise and orange and cardamom ice cream. Should you prefer something savoury, there's an excellent English cheese board served with biscuits, fruit and homemade chutney.
