Review on Carluccio's Caffè
Italian empire builder Antonio Carluccio is on a mission to bring his native food, wine and provisions to town and cities across the UK. The original branch of his Caffè chain occupies a converted fashion showroom just a stroll from Oxford Circus: its high ceilings and natural light help to create the feel of a buzzy cosmopolitan canteen, and there's plenty of seating outside if you fancy watching the world go by.
The formula is the same in each outlet: expect superb savoury bread 'tins', top-notch olives and other imported artisan ingredients, lots of salads and excellent home-made pasta (try Pugliese penne with courgettes, chilli and deep-fried spinach balls or pappardelle with Carluccio's beloved wild mushrooms). There are also a few bigger dishes such as slow-cooked pork belly with braised Savoy cabbage or fillet of sea bass with tomato salsa, plus regional Italian cheeses, desserts and ice creams to round things off.
More than 30 branches are now open nationwide (mostly in London and the Home Counties - including a new flagship store/restaurant in Garrick Street, Covent Garden, WC2). For full details and locations, visit Carluccio's website.
