Review on Acanthus at Macdonald Randolph Hotel
It may not be quite as famous as the Bodleian Library, but the Randolph remains a landmark destination for visitors to Oxford. Built in 1864 and recently given a multi-million pound refurbishment, the grandiose neo-Gothic edifice stands opposite the celebrated Ashmolean Museum and is close to the city's heartbeat.
Diners can soak up wondrous views from the big picture-windows of the luxurious, high ceilinged Acanthus restaurant. The menu treads a familiar path, starting out with slow braised oxtail, pickled red cabbage, before roast loin of Highland venison, chestnuts and sprouts or fillet of wild seabass, fennel puree and langoustine sauce. To close, try banana cooked with orange juice, cacao liqueur, vanilla and flambéed with brandy
Don't forget to take a drink in the Morse Bar, which pays homage to Oxford's most renowned TV detective.
