Review on Aux Charpentiers

This historic bistro, Aux Charpentiers, was originally opened in 1856 and is a real institution in Paris' Saint Germain des Près district now attracting an eclectic mix of locals, tourists, politicians and journalists. The name 'Aux Charpentiers' means 'To Carpenters', and the restaurant has engravings, photos and furniture commemorating this noble trade.

The menu is traditional French bistro fare with a certain amount of influence from the rural Corrèze region with its famous Limousine beef, tenderloin of beef "en papillote, cooked in foil wrapper with carrots, herbs, spices and marrowbone is a house speciality. Elsewhere on the menu look out for Escargots de Bourgogne, Old fashioned "Auvergne" pâté with preserved onions or Correzian calf's head with truffle vinaigrette. The wine list waves only the French flag but contains some reasonably prices, quaffable bottles.
