Review on Restaurant at The Horseshoe Inn

The Horseshoe Inn was originally a blacksmith's shop, before serving its time as a coaching inn on the main road from Edinburgh to the south. After a period in the doldrums, the place was refurbished and reopened in 2005.

The kitchen takes full account of Scottish ingredients: seared West Coast langoustines and king scallops come with leek petit gâteau and red wine butter sauce, while herb-crusted roast saddle of Border lamb is accompanied by orange and coriander couscous, ratatouille and truffle pan juices. Desserts could range from iced coconut parfait with pineapple, honey and pink peppercorn syrup to gratinated red summer fruits with Cointreau sabayon and lavender ice cream.

Sunday lunch is a traditional family occasion and simpler food is also available in the Bar Bistro. Stylish accommodation is available in the Lodge – once the local primary school – across the car park from the inn.
