Review on Red Lion

The Red Lion pub is located in the rural village of Pendoylan well known for its many awards in the Best Kept Village competitions. In July 2011 it was taken over by new owners Mike Henderson, Lloyd James, Dave Edgecombe and Wales and British Lions rugby star Matthew Rees who undertook a stylish refurbishment of the entire property, returning it to the original layout which comprised a welcoming bar and a 150 seat restaurant spread over two floors.

A state of the art kitchen sends out modern food under the leadership of head chef Andy Aston, who previously worked at the well regarded Littleton Arms in Staffordshire. A good way to start is to choose one of their sharing platters such as The Smoke House Board with smoked salmon, mackerel, smoked bacon, cockles and laverbread, prosciutto, chorizo, Toulouse sausage, homemade bread and chutneys. While main courses offer marinated chicken and prawn skewers on a fresh Summer salad, mango and chilli salsa and sweet potato chips or their signature beef steak burger on a warm muffin with tomato, local leaves, smoked bacon, Caerphilly cheese, triple cooked chips and their rustic tomato chutney. Desserts offer an enticing mix of flavours with passion fruit panna cotta with lime shortbread, rum syrup, pineapple coulis and coconut dust or strawberry arctic roll with sweet basil sorbet, white chocolate curls, basil gel and strawberry crisps.
