Review on The Rampsbeck Country House Hotel
The setting is a big plus point at this elegant eighteenth-century country mansion with 18 acres of grounds and gardens overlooking Ullswater. Inside, you can soak up the comfort of the pastel-coloured lounge with its knick-knacks and sofas, before progressing to the luxury of the restaurant.
Proceedings begin with, say, croustade of goats' cheese with roasted peppers and pesto or roast loin of rabbit wrapped in Cumbrian air-dried ham with Parmentier potatoes and mustard dressing. Next comes a soup, before main courses that might range from steamed fillets of Dover sole with langoustines and a herb and shellfish-flavoured butter sauce or roast best end of lamb with potato and garlic rφsti, glazed shallots and lamb jus.
Finish in grand style with the 'symphony of desserts' or opt for something humbler like rhubarb crumble mousse with rhubarb sorbet. Wines have been chosen for value as well as quality, prices are kept in check and there's plenty for everyday drinking as well as special occasions.
